RATIONS FOR PIGS
IMPORTANCE OF PROTEIN. > ' Pigs above the weaning age require a ration with from 4 to 6 parts of carbonaceous food for each part of protein. The younger the pig the smaller the proportion of carbonaceous food required, but the amount can be increased to the limit indicated above as maturity is approached. The following will indicate the composition of common food-stuffs and enable the farmer to distinguish between those which are rich and those which are poor in protein. The figures indicate the parts of carbonaceous food for each part of protein: Separated milk, 2; rape 2; peas 3; lucerne 3; clovers 4; pollard 5; ryegrass 7; swedes 7; turnips 9; barley 10; mangels, 11; carrots, 12; arti chokes 15; potatoes 16; apples 40.
The above list does not indicate the relative value of the different foodstuffs; it merely shows the proportion of carbonaceous food to protein. A watery food such as turnips is, weight for weight, of less value than a more concentrated food, such as barley, although the former contains a higher proportion of protein.
