BOBBY CALF TRADE
PEAK FIGURE REACHED. Bcbby calf killings reached their peak at the Horotiu freezing works last week, when between 15,000 and 16,000 head were killed. About _ the same number was killed the previous week, and it is considered likely that from now on the total will commence to drop. Although the new dairy season is now well under way calves have been coming forward slightly earlier this year. This is probably due to the fact that the growth of grass has been well maintained throughout the winter, and also to the comparatively mild temperatures experienced. There has so far been no appreciable difference between the aggregate killings of bobby calves at Horotiu this year as compared with last year’s figures, but this is probably accounted for by the number of farmers who havte gone over to sheep owing to the shortage of farm labour. The present buoyant conditions in the wool and fat lamb industries also are considered to have a definite bearing on the situation.
