TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

AS REPORTED IN THE WAIPA POST ON 16th AUGUST, 1937. “ We heartily congratulate our fellow townsmen on the result of the poll taken last Wednesday. It now only remains to see that the works sanctioned are carried out in an able and expeditious manner.” The water supply and streets improvement loan of £20,000 was carried by 115 votes to 37, and the municipal gas works loan of £BOOO was carried by 100 votes to 52. Out of 186 ratepayers entitled to vote, only 127 individuals did so —that is to say, the issue was decided by only a 60 per cent vote.

At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the president urged the necessity of widening Alexandra Street at the commencement of the Teasdale Settlement. At present it could be done at small cost by purchasing half a chain of land at the rear of the sections having a frontage to Alexandra Street and moving back the boundaries. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Town Board in the matter.

Waipa County Council decided to install a telephone in the county office at Ohaupo. Ladies’ and men’s hockey teams visited Paterangi. The foundation stone of the new Presbyterian Church was laid, in the presence of a large assemblage, by Messrs John Fisher and J. H. Mandeno.

Twenty-three settlers petitioned the Waipa County Council for the formation of the connecting road between the Paterangi-Te Rore Road and the Ohaupo Road to be opened for traffic.
