TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
AS REPORTED IN THE WAIPA POST ON 13th AUGUST, 1912. Wlaipa Rugby Union’s representatives defeated Maniapoto by 5 points to nil. Mr Chris. Macky was referee, and Wiaipa’s team was: Ned Clarke Matthews, Arnott, D. Kay, G. Richardson, Clifford, D. Thomson, Swainson, F. McConkey, A. Maunder, Henderson, Teddy, A. McConkey, Cunningham, and J. Reid. Clifford scored the try, which Matthews converted. Enthusiastic rifle shots are taking active steps to form a Defence Rifle Club. Mr W. Taylor has offered a good range up to 1000 yards. A large number of pepole assembled on Saturday night in the main street to hear the Municipal Band play. A par about loan proposals: Married men, think of your wives, and vote solid for gas ! Owing to the non-arrival of their uniforms the Boy Scouts’ church parade arranged for Sunday next will not take place. Mr Bockett reports the sale of two of Mr H. Irvine’s properties: the corner house at present occupied by Mr Clotworthy to Mr G. Paul and the one next to it occupied by Mr Phillips to Mr C. Kendrick.
Bidding was dull "at the auction sale of sections in the Raikes estate, but a number of sections were sold privately, and others are now going off readily. Rodney and Rotorua teams fought out the final for the White Horse Cup at Auckland, the former winning by two goals to nil. A farewell social at “ Ivanhoe ” on Friday evening was tendered to Mr P. H. Silcock. He was presented with a travelling rug from the boarders and a cigarette case from the Minstrel, Concert, and Comedy Club. Mr Silcock left the same night to reside in Nelson.
There was a very large assembly at the Town Hall last night to hear
the loan proposals explained. Great enthusiasm prevailed throughout. Mr C. Bowden, Town Board chairman, presided. In connection with the gaslighting proposals Mr J. B. Teasdale favoured electricity, and said he understood electric power would soon be available from Hora Hora at 2d per unit. Mr White condemned the water supply proposal, and declared that the establishment of a reservoir was not practicable. Cost of upkeep would be £5OO per annum, and repairs costing £5OO might be necessary at any time.
