USELESS LAND

ERADICATING WEED PESTS. Throughout South Canterbury gorse, broom and other noxious weeds are securing a stranglehold; in the North Island ragwort is making serious incursions into the agricultural areas, and it appears that the time has come when the Government should take a hand in the matter and insist that the very best should be made of the great asset of the land. The possession of land should carry with it responsibilities, and steps should be taken to ensure that the best possible results are secured from the land in their possession; if the owners refuse to utilise the means at their disposal by their ownership of land it would be in the interest of the welfare of the country that the State should come into the picture and insist that such a policy should not be permitted to continue.
