FARM FERTILISERS
IN AND AROUND THIS DISTRICT. SECOND IN SOUTH AUCKLAND. The districts of Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, and Ohaupo were again outstanding for the quantities of fertilisers unloaded at their railway stations during the year ended 31st March, 1937. With three exceptions, these districts have taken more fertilisers than any other districts in the Auckland province. The Railway Department has supplied the following figures regarding the quantities of artificial manures received at railway stations during the past two years:—
The period of twelve months covered by these figures would include only a portion of the present topdressing season. Since 31st March further large amounts of fertilisers have been received at the above railway stations. Some stations show a falling-off in the quantity of fertilisers received as compared with the figures for the previous year. This may be accounted for by variations in the delivery of fertiliser orders. There is a growing tendency for top-dressing of pastures to be done practically all the year round, and'instead of manure orders coming in with a rush they are now spread more evenly throughout the year.
Fertilisers have to be paid for, so that the quantity of fertilisers used is generally accepted as an indication of the extent of the prosperity of the farmers of a district. The fact that over 19,000 tons of fertilisers were received in the district from Ohaupo to Otorohanga—the locality covered fully by Te Awamutu Courier —reflects the productivity of the district and the good financial position of its farmers.
