A royal quarto book of 48 pages, with 48 iilustrations, issued by the railway publicity branch, tells the story of the remarkable progress of the railways during the past 25 years. In an introductory note the general manager (Mr G. H. Mackley) remarks: “The publication of this book, at the time of the opening of the new Wellington railway station, is intended as a stocktaking to which the owners of the railways are entitled. Readers will see summaries of the farranging services which assure the truth of the New Zealand Railways motto: ‘Safety, Comfort, Economy. Within the limited space of this book it is not possible to give full measure ol the progress achieved during the past quarter of a century, but the descriptions will enable the people to see that their railways can compare favourably with those of older countries.”
