WHEAT V. BUTTER
WHY NO SUBSIDY FOR LATTER PRODUCT. A long discussion on the quality of flour followed at this week’s meeting of the Northern King Country -executive of the Farmers’ Union, upon information received upon this point. The Union had suggested that more mills should devote their activities entirely to the manufacture of wholemeal flour, but the Government did not think that this would result in any economy. The reason for the poor quality of last year's flour was the bad harvest—more Canadian flour was imported than for several years, but the New Zealand flour had to be used to prevent the Canterbury farmers from suffering serious loss. Mr Lurman commented that the wheat growers were being paid a first grade price for a second grade article. If that was done with wheat, then why not with butter? Every speaker was emphatic that the flour at present in use was very poor. It was commented that the harvest in Canterbury was just as bad this year as in the previous year—there had been the same wet season. It was decided to ask the Auckland executive to press the matter further.
