A HAPPY VOYAGE
EXPERIENCES OF MR AND MRS ' BROADFOOT. LIFE ON BOARD SHIP. That Mr and Mrs W. J. Broadfoot, who are due to arrive in England on May 3rd, took an active interest in ship-board life is demonstrated in the “official card” of the race meeting held on April Ist—surely an ominous day. In that race meeting Mr Broadfoot is the starter, and has also nominated a horse for the jumps—- “ Nature’s Wonder,” by Glow Worms, out of Waitomo Caves. Two other M.’sP. also were starters in this race —the Right. Hon. M. J. Savage’s “Head Serang,” by Wisdom out of Experience, and Mr Schramm’s “Auckland’s Pride,” by Rangitoto out of Waitemata. No other King Country people nominated starters besides Mr Boardfoct—otherwise a Dunedin nomination “Thirst Assuaged” might have read “by Drink out of Kihikihi,” instead of “Drink out of Wallacctown.” The rules for the race, as printed on the back cf this card, are interesting. First of all, it is to be carried out by the throwing of dice—which is not surprising as the course was the “verandah cafe.” One rule lays it down that the judge will not disqualify other horses or allow his own to win no, Mr Broad'foot did not win! Other rules were:—-A horse will be disqualified and the owner warned off if it kicks cir jostles another horse during the race, or eats its bedding, drinks its bath water, or is guilty of any practice unbecoming to its pedigree; objections will be settled at the bar at the expense of the objector—and the resulting necessary precaution teetotallers, swarms cf bees, and bits of fluff not allowed on the course! Seamen’s charities benefited by 10 per cent, of the tote.
