WAIPA CLUB’S SUCCESS

LARGE CROWD : KEEN RACING. BIG TOTALISATOR INCREASE. Waipa Racing Club has been consistently fortunate in respect to weather conditions for its summer race meetings over a period of years, and last Saturday the sequence was continued, for the weather was perfect. There waj a very large attendance of patrons, many coming from long distances. The arrangements were very thorough, indicating close attention to the multifarious little details associated with the conduct of a racemeeting, and the secretary, Mr J. G. Wynyard, and his staff are to be congratulated upon the success achieved. The racing was keen and interesting, and some fast times were recorded, this being an indication of the splendid condition of the course. The totalisator investments were easily a record, totalling £25,563, which is £9341 more than last December. This figure was rather surprising, for in the first event (which started fifteen minutes earlier than usual) there was only a small pool of investments. The total investments on each race were: Park Hurdles, £1622 10s; Kihikihi Hack, £3301; Waipa Plate, £2731; Te Awamutu Cup, £3648; Hack Cun. £3546 10s; Ohaupo Hack, £3301; Flying Handicap, £3447 10s; Paterangi Handicap, £3815. A feature was the success of horses carrying No. 5 saddlecloth. Racewhip fell at the second hurdle through another horse blundering in front of him; Palustre ran third in the Kihikihi; Racela was scratched from the Plate, and then Dark Shadow and Quadroon won the two Cups. Bonnie Song ran second in the Ohaupo Hack, and Tonnerre and Miss Lu accounted for the last two races. No double figure dividends were paid, but eight were between £5 and £10; so that backers received very acceptable returns for winners and place-getters. Quadroon was the hottest favourite to win, his return being little more than 100 per cent, profit. A pleasing feature of the meeting was the strict observance paid to the scheduled programme and in this the club is deserving of the highest comment. The last race was run within three minutes of (he advertised time of starting. This is, as many race patrons know, unfortunately a rarity with country club programmes and the progressive policy of the Waipa Club in settino’ an example in this respect has the whole-hearted endorsement of the racing public and all those connected with the sport. After the Hack Cup event, Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo, and a patron of the Racing Club, presented the gold-mounted whip (donated by Mr E. H. Cucksey), to the popular local horseman, R. Horne, who rode the winner, Quadroon. In doing so, Mi- Broadfoot referred to the good sportsmahship of the donor, himself an owner, and to the excellent race ridden by Horne, who had quite thrill-ed-the spectators by the closeness of •Rb finish. Congratulations were also extended to the veteran trainer, Mr W. Stone, who had prepared and produced Quadroon in excellent order. Mr Broadfoot hoped the parties would go to further successes, and then called for cheers for the donor, the horse, and its rider and trainer—a call that was lustily acceded to. There were no regrettable features, the racing being clean throughout. In the hurdle event, Grand Score made a poor jump at the fence in front of the stand, the rider being dislodged; and in the mix up Racewhip blundered and fell. Neither jockey was seriously hurt, O. Mclnally (Racewhip’s rider) sustained abrasions and bruises that were attended to by one of the Club’s honorary surgeons.. Following are the details’ of the racing:—

W. G. PARK HURDLES, Of £l2O, 11 miles 4—3—SANDRIFT, Miss C. Gaddes’ br m, 6yrs by Sandstar —Hymettus mare, 9.0 (J. P. Me Laughlin) j 1 6—B—ERINATION, J. H. Calcutta was first to show out from Grand Score, Sandrift and English Night, and they safely negotiated the first hurdle, but some crowding occurred at the next, and Grand Score lost his jockey, Racewhip also falling. The panel was knocked right over. Calcutta maintained his lead going to the back stretch from Sandrift, English Night, Indolent. Delrain and Survanna. Sandrift ran up to Calcutta, and they raced together for three furlongs, clear of English Night, Indolent, Erination and Delrain. Across the top Indolent was just behind the leading pair, with Erination going well and English Night retiring. With a clear run to the judge Sandrift stayed on solidly to win bv three-quarters of a length from Erination, who was half a length ahead of Calcutta. Indolent A was fourth, followed by Delrain, Seaman and English Night. Time: 2.45 2/5. KIHIKIHI HACK HANDICAP, Of £100; 6 fur. S—B—ROUND UP, M. J. Celtic Lad was out first, and he led from Torch, Round Up and Palustre, but Torch was soon in command and striding along boldlv looked unbeatable. His nearest attendants across the top were Palustre, Cheval de Volee, Round Up and Johnny Walls. Round Up challenged when they straightened up and got up in time to beat Torch by a head, with Palustre half a length away third. Fox Moth was fourth, and then came Cheval de Volee (two lengths away) and Cappy, with Ford Acre at the head of the others. Time 1.14 2/3. Mlaungakowhai showed out first from Taiaha, and Girl Pat, but Orate quickly took command, and led Girl Pat, Ngakaru and King Neptune. Crossing the top Orate was still leading from Girl Pat, King Neptune, Ngakaru and Taiaha, and this was the order when they straightened up. A great race to the post saw King Neptune win by a neck from Orate, with Girl Pat (who could not sustain her run), half a length away third. Ngakaru was fourth, just ahead of Prince Rangi and Maungakowhai. Time, 1.15. TE AWAMUTU CUP. Of £300; li miles and about 1— DARK SHADOW, G. W. Goulsbro); 6—7 Scotland, 8.10 P Fearn); 7—6 Prince Colossus, 8.3 (G. Cameron).

Mungatoon was quickest to find his feet and he led through the straight from Prince Colossus and Dark Shadow, but the latter soon took charge and he led right round —in fact he was never headed—his nearest attendants, along the back, were Prince Colossus and Mungatoon, but Mazir was making up his ground steadily and in the run to the judge he passed all but Dark Shadow, who won by Itlengths. Mungatoon hung on for third, a neck away, and then came Jonothan, Master Brierly and Prince Colossus, the latter compounding halfway down the straight. Time, 2.14 1/5. Cameron). After some delay, Loombination was first out, but soon Trouvaille took charge from Rulette, Loombination, Gay Streak, Valrent and Quadroon. Rulette and Trouvaille were abreast along the back, just ahead of Quadroon, Valpai, Gay Streak and Loombination. At the top the main positions were unchanged, but soon Quadroon displaced Rulette. Then the battle royal ensued to the judge’s box, Quadroon winning nicely by a head from Trouvaille with Vera Acre a head away third, Royal Nation finished strongly for fourth, and then cams Rulette, Valrent, Gay Streak and Loombination. Time, 1.48 4/5. OHAUPO HACK HANDICAP, Of £110; 7 fur. 3 3—BESIEGE, Mr H. Tims’ b g, 4yrs, by General Latour— Rikoriko, 7.7 (C. G. Goulbro) -1 4 4—BONNIE SONG, H. E. latter then tool: command, but Racemosus was quickly up alongside, with Little Artist, Besiege and Gay Sister next. Bonnie Song and Racemosus raced together just ahead of Little Artist and Besiege and when they straightened up Bonnie Song was half a length ahead of Racemosus, with Besiege travelling well. The latter got up in time to win by a short head from Bonnie Song, with Gay Sister third half a length away and Little Artist fourth. Next to finish were Racemosus and Thurwind. Time 1.28. After a rather tiresome delay, due chiefly to Tonnerre, who dashed under the tapes, a fair start was effected, and Tonnerre dashed away with Adelene, Galilee and Gay Seton as his nearest attendants. Tonnerre maintained his advantage to win by half a length from Adelene, who was well clear of Galilee. Sweet Rose was fourth, followed by Enge, Star Artist and Solaria.
