BRITIiSH INTERESTS IN SPAIN. “It remains true,” says the Economist, “that our interest—no less than our duty as a democratic Power—incline us to the side of the Spanish Government. Perhaps the consideration most likely to appeal to Mr Baldwin and his colleagues is the strategical situation in the western Mediterranean' and th'e traditional attitude I this country has long adopted toward i the ambitions of Germany and Italy I in that region. The compelling voice ! of General Smuts from South Africa urged these considerations on the British Government. We see nothing hypocritical in a stout defence of our own interests when they coincide with duty and good sense. Unless the British Government show without delay that they are prepared to act together with the French and other Governments, in upholding the international rights of democratically-elected Governments, the success of the rebels’ violence in Spain may prove merely a prelude to the forcible successes of dictatorships.” .
