BUTTER AND CHEESE

LONDON MARKET FIRMER. There was a firmer tone in the London butter market at the close of last week, according to the weekly report received by the Marketing ’ Department. Quotations at the close for New Zealand finest butter were 99s to 100 s per cwt, compared with 96s to 97s in the previous week, and 105 s to 106 s a year ago. After selling below Australian over a period of weeks, New Zealand butter has recovered the premium it normally enjoys. With the advance of the new season the quality of the Dominion's shipments is steadily improving and this, no doubt, is an important factor in the maintenance of a price advantage. In spite of rather smaller deliveries from store over the week the New Zealand stock position is sound, 3666, tons being held, as against 4961 tons in the previous week and 3514 tons a year ago. The market for cheese is steady at the previous week’s rates of 70s 6d to 71s per cwt for white, and 66s to 67s for coloured, compared with 52s to 53s per cwt a year ago. The quantity in store is considerably lower than a year ago, 35,155 crates being held, as against 70,774.
