WORK OF THE MONTH
IN WAIPA COUNTY. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The< following report was submitted by the engineer, Mr J. W. Civil, to the monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council on Monday, referring to the southern part of the County, and was adopted:— RANGIAOHIA RIDING. Great South Road Main Highway. Ohaupo-Te Awamutu Section:—sB cubic yards of Ta Kawa metal have been supplied, carted and spread, and grading carried out by motor grader. Stripping has been carried out at Pollard’s Pit, and 904 cubic yards of gravel have been carted from same; 536 cubic yards on to Te Rahu Road, 230 cubic yards on to Sutton’s Road, and 138 cubic yards on to Muir’s Road. The said roads have also been graded by motor grader, and grass sods carted away. Racecourse Road: 120 cubic yards of gravel have been carted from the Railway Pit, and the road re-sur-faced. Grading and general surface-work have been carried out on other roads in the Riding. Hairin-Puahue Road: Plans have been prepared and completed for improvements to this road, at Junction with Long’s Road, including a fi'.v chains of Long’s Road. ORAKAU RIDING. Great South Road Main Highway. Kihikihi Township kerbing and channelling: An agreement has been arranged with the Kihikihi Town Board, with regard to kerbing. Levels have been taken, plans drawn, and arrangements made for the laying of 25 chains of concrete kerbing and channelling, and the said works are well in hand. Arrangements have, also been made with the Engineer of the Main Highways Board, regarding the metalling and sealing of the full width of road between the said kerbing and channelling. Kihikihi-Arapuni Main Highway: Some 132 cubic yards stripping have been carried out at Rea’s Pit, and 140 cubic yards of gravel carted on to the highway, and spread. Grading has also been carried out. About 11 miles of this road at the South Boundary of Sections 1 and 2, belonging to Messrs Walker and Scott, have never been legalized. This portion of the highway was in the Parawera Road Board Area, before being merged into the County in 1922. I would suggest that steps be taken to have same legalized. Kihikihi Flat Road Grant. £1 for £1: Specifications and proposals have been prepared and forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval for metalling the unfinished portion of this road. 711 cubic yards of Punui River gravel have been carted from the dump, and repairs carried out to Owairaka Valley Road. 32 cubic yards of gravel have been carted and spread on to Payne’s Road. Grading and other surface-work have been carried out on other roads in the riding. St. Leger and Branch Road. Ths settlers interested in metalling of the unmetalled portion of this road, and portion of the Back Road, have been interviewed, and the Minister of Public Works has been written to. asking that a Grant be placed on the Supplementary Estimates for this work. MANGAPIKO RIDING. Te Awamutu-Meadways: 98 cubic yards of sand from Perrin’s Pit, and 48 cubic yards from the Railway Pit, have been carted, and portions of this road re-sanded. The usual grading has been carried out by motor grader. Hawthorne’s Road Grant. £1 for £1: Plans and specifications have been completed and forwarded to the Public Works Department, for approval. Tenders have also been called for forming 80 chains of 20 foot road (contract No. 327). Tenders are before the Meeting. Plans and specifications for Alcock’s and Macky’s Road Grants, £1 for £l, have been prepared and forwarded to the Public Works Department, for approval, and tenders called for the formation. Tenders are before the Meeting for contracts Nos. 324 and 328. Pirongia Mountain Road: This road has been re-surfaced with 262 cubic yards of sand, carted from Steel’s Pit. 158 cubic yards of sand have been carted from Bowman’s Pit, 82 cubic yards on to Paterangi-Pirongia Road, and the balance, with 46 cubic yards of sand from Perrin’s Pit, has been carted on to the Paterangi-Te Rore Road, and spread. Frankton-Pirongia Main Highway: 56 cubic yards of metal and sand have been used for repairs on this road, and grading carried out by motor grader. Other roads have received attention, with regard to grading and general surface-work. KAKEPUKU RIDING. Plans have been prepared for improvements on the Tokanui and Te Mawhai Roads, ready for the time when the said work can be carried out. Grading and general surface-work have been carried out on other roads throughout the Riding. GENERAL. 63 men have been employed as follows: —33 men on ragwort on Scheme No. 5. 3 men on ordinary work on Scheme No. 5. 2 mein on Rukuhia Drains on Scheme No. 13. 38 men on ragwort, employed by County. It is expected that the two new trucks will be supplied and at work within a fortnight from the, present time.
