TOPICS OF THE HOUR. BOWLING SEASON OPENED. (Our Resident Representative.) Delightful weather conditions favoured the opening function of the Otorohanga Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon. Many visitors from neighbouring clubs were welcomed by the president, Mr E. W. Strawbridge. Altogether some 65 players from Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Te Kuiti and locally took part in the opening play. The following are the results ot the inter-club contests, Otorohanga players being mentioned first in each instance: Miller, Landman, Turnbull and Hoskins 27 v. Waugh, Holah, Andrews and Fisk jnr. 19; To zer, Ingham, Strawbridge and Hill 12 v. J. T. North, Dowds, Bevin and Pascoe 20; Pilkington, Jackson, Dennison and Small 23 v. Weston, McCauley, O’Connell and Abbott 21; England, Parkinson, Nightingale and Langkilde 23 v. Shakes, Burton, Read and Baddely 19; Munro, Morrison, Cooper and Willis 11 v. Wilson, Browne, Mills and Douglas 30; Larsen, Hunter, Porter and Dalziel 21 v. Richards, Zainey, Wooldridge and Hammond 13; Bluck, Sing, S. J. Fortescue and Atkinson 15 v. Arnold, Wilson, Martin and Cook 22; Crosby, Baker, Thorne and August 23 v. Innes, Henderson, Fisk sen., and Snowden 16. The visitors were entertained in the usual manner prior to their departure for home. All agreed that the local greens were in excellent playing condition. M. Pratt was the only representative from the Otorohanga Gun Club to get into the money at the clay bird competitions at Ruakura on Saturday. In the five bird double rise he shot the possible oft a 16 yards handicap, and divided with others. He also gained other placings in various events. The members of the Otorohanga District High School Committee foregathered one evening last week to farewell Mr W. Moorman, a valued member of tho committee for a long period, who is leaving Otorohanga, where he has been railway stationmaster for the past five years, to assume a similar position at Tuakau. Members made eulogistic reference to the usefulness of Mr Moorman as a committeeman, and on behalf of the committee the chairman (Mr W. I. Bowyer) presented him with a valuable Swan fountain pen and pencil as a memento of pleasant and useful experiences as a school committeeman at Otorohanga. A very enjoyable evening was spent at the Otorohanga studio of Miss J. McGettigan, when her junior music pupils met to bid farewell to Masters Melville and Jack Moorman, who are about to leave the district. The children's band opened proceedings with the National Anthem, and a selection of nursery rhymes. An outstanding item was the rendering of Schubert s •Lullaby” by the string quartette. On behalf of the gathering Master Peter Dalziel presented to each guest valuable and appropriate books. Miss Valerie Mossman, the youngest member of the Kowhai Musical Club, presented them with a framed picture of the children’s composer, Schumann. The function concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne” and “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.”
