A PRINCELY GIFT

TO RESTORE CHATEAU OF VERSAILLES. Mr J. D. Rockefeller, Jnr., who has given £466,000 towards the restoration of the chateau of Versailles, went there recently to inspect the work made possible by his gift, and was received by M. Jean Zay, Minister for National Education (says the Paris correspondent of the London Times). By this work of restoration many of the old glories of Versailles have been revived. The Pavilion de Rocaille, which had fallen into such ruin that the fountains could not be seen, is again at its best. The fine sculptures of the Bassin de Neptune can now again be seen. The rust has been removed from the iron supports and the statues that have been replaced. The Bassin du Plafond, behind the Grand Trianon, which had almost disappeared, has been rebuilt. The Grand Canal has been restored, and the monumental staircases have been replaced. In the Trianon Queen Marie Antoinette’s theatre has been reconstructed, and for the first time since the revolution a play was performed there in June. The play was “Le Devin du Village,” in which the Queen herself used to have a part. Mr Rockefeller later called on President Lebrun, from whom he received the insignia of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.
