NEW LOCOMOTIVES

. FOR L.N.E.R. The L-N.E.R. has just completed at its Doncaster Works two locomotives of outstanding design. One called “Green Arrow,” No. 4771, is of the 2-6-2 type and has been designed for hauling main line passenger trains and express goods trains. This engine is the first of its class in Great Britain. It has three cylinders 181 ins diameter by 26 ins stroke, coupled wheels 6 ft 2 ins in diameter, a boiler pressure 220 lbs to the square inch and a grate area of 411 square feet. The total weight of the engine and tender in working order is 144 tons. A further four of these engines are to be constructed at Doncaster Works together'with twenty-eight to be built at the Darlington Works of the L.N.E.R. The other locomotive is a modification of the famous “Earl Marischal” and is designed for hauling heavy East Coast express trains over tee arduous gradients between Edinburgh and Aberdeen. A distinguishing feature about this engine is that it has been streamlined in a manner similar to the record-breaking “Silver Link” which hauls the Silver Jubilee train. This streamlining has been carried out in order to fender the engine more suitable for service on the exposed parts of the line between Edinburgh and Aberdeen where a strong north-east wind is frequently encountered. This engine, No. 2003 is called “Lord President” and with the “Earl Marisehal” and “Cock o' the North” is the most powerful passenger engine in Great Britain. It has three cylinoers e«-b 21 ins by 26 ins, 6 ft 2in coupled wheels and a grate area of 50 square feet. Its total weight in working order is 167 tons. Another three engines of this type are under construction at Doncaster ana

will be named “Mons Meg,” “Wolf of Badenoch,” and “Thane of Fife.” Both these engines have been designed by Mr H. N. Gresley, C.8.E., D.Sc., Chief Mechanical Engineer of the L.N.E.R.
