THE WORLD’S OLDEST SHIP.
A HIGHLAND HEROINE Every now and then there arises the question—which ship is the oldest now afloat ? The latest claim is made by Australia on behalf of the iron steamer Edina, built in 1854 by Messrs Barclay, Curie and Co., Whiteinch, and still on active service on the Commonwealth coast. But (says the Evening- Times) we do not require to go far away to find a vessel which puts the Edina quite out of the running. Messrs Macßayne’s iron paddle steamer Glencoe, still doing her darg- in the West Highlands, dates from 184 G—eight years before the Edina—when she was built as the Mary Jane by Messrs Tod and McGregor—Messrs D. and W. Henderson’s predecessors at Mcadowside. What is more, the Glencoe was always a steamer, and has her-original engines, whereas the Edina was originally a sailer. So it would seem to be one up for Mcadowside as against White inch.
