POLITICAL

THE TAURANGA SEAT Mr R. Coulter, who has already definitely announced his candidature for the Tauranga seat, visited Tauranga on Friday, where, he met a deputation representing the Tauranga Farmers’ Party. After Mr Coulter had stated his views on political matters it was unanimously resolved to support him at the election. Interviewed by a Te Aroha News representative upon his return, Mr Coulter said that he did not wish to take any unfair advantage of the sitting member, and would delay starting his campaign till the conclusion of the session. MATAMATA CONFERENCE FIXED Although a few months ago it appeared as if considerable interest was being aroused in the matter of selecting an opponent for the sitting member (Mr C. E. Macmillan) for the Tauranga electorate, nothing so far has been decided. Meetings of the Liberal-Labour (now the National Party) supporters were held in various centres ar.d delegates appointed to attend a conference to be held at Matamata for the purpose of making a selection. In the meantime proposals for the fusion of the Reform and Liberal-Labour parties were being discussed. Whether this had anything to do with the Matamata conference not being called is not known but it was not until late last week that it was announced that the Matamata conference is to eventuate today. Five names of possible aspirants for selection as the official National Party candidate for the Tauranga seat have been freely spoken of. These are: Mr Robert Coulter, Mayor of Te Aroha; Mr W. C. Kennedy, of Te Aroha; Mr Lawrence Johnstone, who has been living in Morrinsville for some time; Mr Robert ‘King, of Te Puke; and Mr B. C. Robins, of Tauranga. Some time ago there was .talk of a Country Payty candidate being nominated, but nothing has been done so far.

A Reform candidate for the Ohinemuri electorate to oppose Mr H. Poland (elected-as an Independent Liberal) has been announced in Mr A. M. Samuel, of Tirau.—-Matamata Record.
