THE NEW SCHOOL SITE
A GENEROUS OFFER SCHOLARS TO ASSIST IN TREE RAISING Mr McCaskill, science instructor at the District High School, waited upon the committee last evening, and offered to provide trees and shrubs for the hew school site without cost to the committee. The scheme put forward by Mr McCaskill was that a part of the new school ground be set aside as a nursery for the raising of the necessary trees and shrubs. The scholars would carry out the work of raising the plants as part of their school work, under his supervision. If a supply of shelter trees were wanted for present planting they could procure these from the Forestry Department free, of charge. It was understood that 200 trees had already been ordered, and if these were not wanted immediately they could be set oiit in nursery rows and be available as required. Mr McCaskill considered it more profitable that the boys be employed in this way rather than in growing vegetables./
Mr Bruce said that Mr McCaskill’s offer was a very generous one, and that if the boys whilst being instructed in horticulture could raise the necessary trees for planting in the new grounds they should accept the offer. The suggestion was a most excellent one and should help the committee considerably. Mr Macdonald thought they should put in a shelter belt this season. The majority of the committee however, held chat a nursery as suggested would be the most satisfactory way to commence operations, and Mr McCaskill’s generous offer , was accepted.
