TRIUMPH OVER BLINDNESS

One of the most amazing achievements on record is that of Mr Eric Dowdell. Although he has been blind all his life, he has succeeded in graduating in Class One and Honours in Modern History at Oxford. Mr Dowdell writes by means of a type-writer; for mathematics, the hardest subject of all for him, he has a board jvith holes in various places. Slugs fit \nto these holes, and by moving these slugs Mr Dowdell cpn indicate the various numbers. By these means Mr Dowdell obtained his results, which were then dictated to a companion. He won a valuable scholarship at Oxford, where he is a Fellow of St. John’s College.
