When the currency first began to be debased investment im the mark went on in New Zealand and Australia on a fair scale. Purchasers, fortunately, soon paid attention to the warning given them, and desisted from following the quotations down, with the' object of averaging the cost to them of tlleir holdings. To-day marks are being sold as a curiosity by traders at the rate of about 10,000,000 for Is Gd, which is a good deal above their hdafiiflftl value; in the exchanges. The prospect of holders obtaining anything for their purchases is very /remote. While this is recognised, some German securities are held to afford the opportunity for though with them also the risks attendant upon investment are so exceptional that they, too, are best left alone. German 3 per cents, could recently be bought for 5s 6d, and Prussian 4 per cents, for 11s 6d. In London and New York such stocks trebled their price in a few days recently because of. the belief that if the German loan ,0f forty millions comes upon the international market the German Ministry may feel that to make the issue acceptable it will promise - to enter- into some arrangement regarding German securities that will make them more - valuable. Those who count upon anything of the kind are forgetting German financial history sifiee the \yar ended.
