CATTLE DISEASES

THE “FOOT AND MOUTH” TROUBLE AN EXTRACT RE TREATMENT At the Piako County Council meeting on Monday the following letter was read from the Buller County Council: — “In regard to your circular requesting that the Government be asked to take more precautions against the .introduction of Foot and Mouth Disease into N.Z., one of our Councillors, Mr Della Vedova, has interested himself in the matter, and at the last meeting produced a cutting from a newspaper showing a method of curing this disease. The Council directed me to enclose a copy of this extract.” THE EXTRACT “The German Government, through' Dr. Wiemann, Councillor to the Department of Agriculture, announces a vaccine which has given satisfactory results in treatment of the Foot and Mouth Disease affecting cattle. The present vaccine is manufactured on an island in the Baltic Sea, because the virulence of the disease required precaution. Dr. Wiemann declares that this vaccine has been very successful in Germany, less than 1 per cent, of the affected animals given the serum dying. Dr. Wiemann does not know whether the German vaccine would work successfully in England and America where the disease is most virulent. Professor French, however, is most optimistic over the discoveries, believing that a new vaccine will soon be produced that will end the Foot and Mouth Disease everywhere.” x The Chairman: I believe these people are on the right lines.
