TIMBER ROYALTIES
AN APPEAL TO COUNTY COUN;4I/ cils , •■■ . WHERE LOSS OF REVENUE IS SUFFERED The clerk of the x Taumarunui County Council wrote as follows to Monday’s meeting of the Piako Coimcil:— “Those Counties suffering loss of revenue from timber royalties havd brought their claims prominently be- ' fore Parliament and‘have now reach- • ed a stage when success is almost assured and this appeal for moral support is being made to all counties not ’ interested financially. The equity of the claim to “halves” has been made clear to successive Counties Conferences which have invariably passed affirmative remits. Mr F. T. Martin’s opinion states the position and affords full information on the subject. lam instructed to request your Council to pass a resolution in support of payment pf half of all revenue from the sale of Crown timber to Counties from within whose boundaries the revenue is derived, and to forward copies of such resolution, at an . early date, to the Member for your district, the Hon. the Prime Minister, and the Hon. Minister for Lands.” The Chairman: This resolution applies to County Councils wherein the Government is selling timber off Crown Lands. Cr. Kennedy: I would- like to see this resolution supported, as it means a big thing to County Councils concerned. The chairman said it should be r pointed out that the Crown does not pay anything towards the upkeep of these County roads. The resolution was supported.
