REST ROOM
FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN NEW MODERN BOROUGH BUILDINGS VIEWS OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The President of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr 11. E. D. Willcox, said at the meeting of the Chamber on Tuesday that he was impressed with the need of instituting a rest room for women and children. He had had the urgent necessity of it impressed upon him. There should be a place that women and children could use as a rest room. He did not think it was out of place to refer to the need of Te Aroha of modern up-(o-date Borough Council Chambers. The old buildings were not worthy of Te Aroha and had served their day. A town of the importance of Te Aroha should have more creditable Borough Chambers. They could also perhaps have a room to house a municipal library in, in the new building when it was erected. Mr Williamson said that at Cambridge a rest room was provided for women and children in the municipal chambers. At the small cost of Id the conveniences could be used. Mr Fitzpatrick said that the conveniences on the wharf in Auckland brought in the handsome sum of £7OO to the Auckland City Council. x Mr Caudwell said it was high time something was done. He was glad to see -that the Chamber was making a move.
The Mayor, Mr Coulter, referred to the action recently taken in the matter of securing a rest room as already dealt with in the press. In regard to municipal buildings the Borough Council had deferred the matter out of consideration of. questions of economy arising out of the hard times. In consequence of the financial stress the Borough Council had not desired to increase the rates.
In reference to erecting a rest room His Worship said that the Borough Council had the matter under careful consideration and he anticipated that action would be taken in the near future. All were agreed on the need of a rest room. When the site the Borough Council was negotiating for had been transferred to it the way would be clearer to take any action it desired. Until this site was secured it would be better to wait. Then action could be taken to arrange for building. The president thanked the Mayor for his statement.
