LOCAL AND GENERAL

, During the past twelve. months 48 bankruptcies have occurred in Waikato district, the total assets being realised at £8655. The dividends and preferential claims paid totalled £4627.

Mr G. H. Nicholls, the treasurer of the Te Aroha School Carnival Committee, having returned to business, will be pleased to receive all money in the hands of the district secretar-

The Rev. R. M. Ryburn, M.A., who is one of the most gifted of Dominion preachers, delivered an able and powerful sermon at the services in St. David’s Presbyterian Church yesterday. Mr Ryburn will conduct his concluding services here next Sunday.

The Te Aroha Band rendered a series of selections in the Domain on Sunday evening. The items were much appreciated by those who were in the Domain and by the townspeople generally. Quite a number of local residents remarked upon the high standard of efficiency the bandsmen are attaining. It is to be hoped that the delightful music of last Sunday evening will be the forerunner of many such programmes.

Nearly half the marriages that take place in the Dominion are celebrated on Wednesday. The most popular periods of the year are Easter and Christmas, with a slight preference for Easter.

For the information of those who took tickets on the ' crepe-de-chine nightdress and boudoir cap recently raffled in aid of the Riverside Queen we have been asked to publish that No. 72 was the winning number. Mr Monroe, of Beale Bros., was the lucky winner, and generously donated the outfit back to the Riverside committee to be raffled again.

“Criticism seems to be the only thing that borough councillors have received lately,” said Mr R. G. Fawkner at a farewell social at Morrinsville recently. He said they deserved better than that; they were doing their best. He thought it hardly a fair thing that'councillors should be held up to’ridicule. With the present Morrinsville Borough Council they had a fine body of public men, and it behoved the townspeople to help the Council in every possible way. There was a chance now for constructive criticism, and “croakers” in the town would be better employed if they tried to obtain a seat on the Council and lent some practical aid in giving their fellow men a helping hand.

. Twenty-eight applications Avere received by the Tauranga County Council for the position of engineer, which has been rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr J. R. Page (states the Times). These applications were considered by the Council on Friday, and Mr A. A. Woodward was appointed to the position. Mr Woodward is at present assistant-engineer to the Piako County Council. He had previously been assistant-engineer to the Whakatane County Council, and was also acting-engineer for a considerable time. Before joining the Whakatane County staff he had many years experience in private practice, surveying and roading Government and private estates both in New Zealand and South Africa. Mr Wood-, ward is to take up his duties next week.

According to an experienced farmer the clipping of cows flanks and udders in late autumn and winter is not resorted to as much as it should be. A few dairy farmers realise the importance of it, and regularly clip when the hair becomes long and troublesome. By removing the long hail cows are greatly improved for milking, whether it is done by machine or hand. They stand quieter,' because the pulling of hairs is completely avoided, and the appearance of the animals is generally improved. From a sanitary standpoint alone the clipping of cows’ flanks and udders may often be desirable, for every milker knows that dirt collects around these parts, and nothing can keep it out of the milk bucket during the process of milking. With the hairtkept short a little soap and water will render these parts clean, and practically ho' dirt or hairs will get into the milk.
