PIAKO COUNCIL
CHAIRMAN’S HONORARIUM COUNTY COUNCIL TAKES ACTION £10(T A YEAR TO BE PAID At the last ordinary meeting of the Piako County Council Cr. Kennedy again brought forward the question of paying the chairman an honorarium. ' Though he did not always agree with the chairman, he said that he recognised his public spirit. He did a lot of work for the Council and should be recompensed. Cr. Whitechurch agreed with the views expressed and moved that the chairman be paid an honorarium of £IOO a year. Cr. Hughes in seconding the motion said it was little enough to pay. He knew of ho more capable chairman than Cr. Walters. Hehad a great deal to do. He went all over the County in his own car at his own expense.
Cr. Walters thanked councillors for the generous feeling expressed by the proposal but said he would prefer that the matter be left to the end of the year and if anyone slse took the position they could move in the matter again.
Cr. McLean highly eulogised the chairman’s services and asked him to reconsider his decision as by so doing he would make it easier for the future.
Cr. Lowry also urged the chairman to reconsider his refusal but he recognised the amount suggested was not adequate for the services Cr. Walters rendered.
The' chairman: If, that is the way you look at it I witi accept it. There are plenty of things I can give it to. (Applause.)
