KNOWLEDGE COVETED BY KINGS
Dairy factory managers have some tough questions put to them sometimes, and tho following is quoted by tbe Wairoa Bell as being not a bad sample ; Mr Thos. Downs, manager of tbe Northern Wairoa factory was bowling along in his “Lizzie” bent upon an urgent engagement, when 'be was frantically accosted from the sidewalk by a dairy farmer in town. After prompt application of the clutch lever and s me screech ing of brakes, and heavy friction on tyres halted so suddenly, this was the question died at the dai r y manager : “Mr Downs, can you tell me what will the price of butter be next winter?” In the parley of the “ring’’ that would have been called a knock-out blow, but Mr Downs was equal to tho occasion If any man oould safely answer that question he might be a manager of Trusts or become a Trust himsMf, for such knowledge is coveted by kings.
