“ONE DOUBLE ONE”
IHE TERRIBLE NEW ZEALANDERS Speaking at a social gathering iu Wellington the other night, Major Audrews told how the New Zealanders, when engaged ou a raid, loved to black their faces, paiuting their noses white aud indicating a big red mouth, and to arm themselves with a revolver aud a big “ waddy, ” made by sorewiuga uut ou the handle of an entrench-' ing tool. This waddy ” they called a “ one double one; ” for that was the murk it made wlieu it caught a man fairly ou the head, and he wouldn’t want a second blow then. They struck terror into the Germans, sure enough. One night a German officer was brought a prisoner into his dugout iti charge of two stalwart “ New Zealauders, ” aud he uoticed that the man looked behind him ouce or twice as if he feared something wa9 after him; aud as soou as the officer saw him, he said to him in French, “You are an officer, I claim your protection.” “My protection ! —against what?” asked Major Andrews, “Against these New Zealand savages, ” -was the reply. “ But I am a New Zealander, ” said the major. '• You, a New Zealander! Impossible !’’ exclaimed the offiicu’. “Impossible!” “He had seen them, you know, ” remarked Major Andrews amid laugnter. “He had seen them, and he knew!” (Renewed laughter.)
