ANZAC DAY CELEBRATION
TE AROHA WILL OBSERVE APRIL 25 At the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening a decision was come to in the matter of observing the Anzac Day celebration on the 25th April. Rev. J. Dukes wrote expressing sympathy with the Council’s intention to hold a united service on Anzac Day, but |regretted he would be absent from Te Arolia on that date. Owing to the Methodist Conference not appealing against the enlistment of ministers and students it was impossible to procure a substitute. However, he was quite sure Methodists throughout the circuit would support a united service. Rev. 0. Blundell intimated his willingness to participate in the united commemorative service.
Cr. Bell hcped the 25th would be observed.
Cr. Morkon thought it better to conform with the Government’s request. Cr. Rayner said at last meeting the Council had decided upon the 23rd, but since then the general wish, especially that of the actual *• Anzacs ” in the district, was favorable to the 24th.
His Worship said he had been approached by several “ Anzacs,” and all favored the 25th.
Cr. Coulter supported, contending that even if a council election were being conducted, Anzac Day should be observed on its proper anniversary. Cr. Bell said he was under a misapprehension as to the exact date. Cr. Rayner moved that Anzac Day be observed at Te Aroha on the 25th.
Cr. Morison rose to a point of order, contending that the authorities’ request should bo observed. Doubtless this decision had been come to after mature consideration. A munioipal election would bo held on Anzac Day. Ho was strongly opposed to ths clashing of the two functions. The Government may alter election day in the future, but it was too late to alter it this year. Cr. Mackie expressed the opinion that ”0 election would be held. However. if ‘‘Anzacs ” wished to observe the 9 e . ihe Couucil should support
tnt . Chi» eii strongly advocated observing the service on the 25th. He again explained that last month ho was under a misapprehension.
Cr. Brown supported, and the motion was carried.
