MOTORING NOTES
By FrABK Tmjg He lookc 1 to see if h's petrol tank was empty with a match. It wasu’t. * * # You probably keep track of tyre mileage, bnt do you keep track of valve mileage too ? Your valves should be ground in at least every 1000 miles, although some people let them run to 1,500. At that time they will be found to be so badly pitted that it will bo a long job grinding them in. I * * * You will regret it if you allow yourself to be stampeded into buying a motor car. Make sure that you understand the fundamentals. You can very easily acquire an understanding of those underlying mechanical principles which it is to have in order to buy a motor car intelligently. Any Buick agent will be very glad indeed to help you to acquiro this knowledge at any time. * •:!:• * Asa motor gets older it gets noisier. Watch the valve tappets and keep them adjusted, as they become very noisy if they open up. The clutch collar works loose and must be repaired. The timing gears wear and should be replaced. The pistons wear and give “ piston slap ” which can only be removed by regrinding cylinders and using larger pistons. A little science and a lot of sweat make a great combination.
Every car should carry a full complement of tools, although the manufacturer has one idea ou the subject and the experienced driver has auother one. Make a list of tools etc., that you upually carry on the car and check it up occasionally. Tools are borrowed or mislaid and so are not at hand when wanted. * # * Many a ear buyer looking for sympathy needs two good kicks properly placed.
