CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

To tho Editor

Sir, —Just a short note anent yonr report of proceedings at the last meeting of the above august assembly. Horse racing barred, pic lure shows taxed, hotel bars closed at six o’clock, and other reforms advocated. I beg to bring in counter proposals, I would propose that tho bowling greens be ploughed up and put down in potatoes for the benefit of the Red Cioss Fund— (How would that suit Mr Morisou?) ; that the butter-fat tax be increased to 3d per lb (for Mr Strange), and that a thick clump of oak trees be planted for fifty feet down each frontage of Messrs Hetheringtons drapery establishment (their shade may be grateful to Mr Rayner). One soldier boy of my acquaintance passed what to my mind seemed a very sensible remark on tne occasion of his going to the front. He said “ Because some of us are going to fight for our country we do not expect that you should make yourselves miserable and mope round. We would much rather think you were enjoying yourselves to the best of your ability, and we won't be annoyed whan we read in your letters that you won a few pounds at the races, or had a good time at this ar that dance or entertainment." I fancy that young fellow voiced the opinion of the majority of his fellow*, and if the gentlemen of Te Aroha go on the lines they advocate then let U 3 have six Sundays in the week and one day of prayer, .and 1 guess we will be miserable enough to please them, and to make the "brave fellows who are fighting for us miserable too. —I am, Talk Sense
