Te Aroha Borough Council

. SPECIAL MEETING. A Special Meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Borough Council offices on Wednesday night last. There were present Crs. T. Stanley (Deputy Mayor), W. Mackie J. Brown. J. M. Bell, W, Burrett, and C. Rayner. Apologies for non-attendance were received from His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Norrell) and Crs. Morison and Pattullo. CORRESPONDENCE £3OO DRAINAGE LOAN The Tourist Department wrote stating that the £3OO for drainage works was placed in the Bank to the Council’s credit. Received. MUNICIPAL BAND The secretary of the band, Mr G. Sherlock wrote to enquire if the Council had carried into effect the resolution passed at the ing of the council re the of £2O to the Band and the payment of the bandmaster’s salary. He considered this should be done if not already carried out, in order to give the members of the Band some encouragement. The clerk said that Mr Sherlock must have misunderstood the resolution, as he told him at the last meeting that the Council had nothing to do with the Band. The clerk also said that at the meeting of the Band Finance Committee on Tuesday, a resolution was passed calling in al instru nants and Band property. It was also stated that a public meeting would be held later. The Council approved the resolution calling in the instruments; and Mr Sherlock’s letter was received. STREET HOARDING Permission to erect a hoarding taking in six feet of footpath in front of the premises to be erected for MrW. H. Herbert in Whitaker Street, and a water supply per metre' - during erection, was asked for by W. Marshall. Granted.

A resolution was added that the contractor be called upon to place the sum of £2 in the .hauds of the Council, such sum to be returned - when the footpath was placed in the same condition as it now stands in.

PAEROA ELECTRIC LIGHTING The Paeroa Borough Council asked for the Council’s consent to allow the electrical engineer Mr A, J. Clarke, to assist the Paeroa Works Committee to frame a report, bn an electric lighting scheme for Paeroa. It was stated that Mr Clarke would probably be required for a couple of days in Paeroa. Cr. Mackie proposed that the application be granted Seconded by Cr. Brown and carried. TE AROHA BRIDGE DOMAIN The Department of Lands and Survey drew attention to the New„ Zealand Gazette of 25th November containing the Governor’s Order in Council placing the Borough Council in charge, and fixing the first meeting for the 22nd of December, Received; , TAR SPREADER Messrs Curry Eliott & Co., wrote stating that a tar spreader for laying hot tar could be supplied which would lay one mile of road thirty feet wide per day. It was also stated that the rental charge would be 20s per day, and that the machine would greatly minimise the dust nuisance. Received.

ELECTRIC STANDARD The electrical engineer reported that iron poles, to be made would cost £3, but could be purchased for £2 in Sydney. Reinforced concrete would cost approximately 22s 6d each, and could be easily made by borough workmen with moulds. The Engineer said he would go into the cost of making moulds, aod report at next meeting, ASSISTANT ENLISTING The engineer also reported that one of his assistants, Mr S. Wood, had enlisted and expected to be called up in either January or Feb* ruary, and he desired to know, what steps he'should take re sending in his notice of termination as he did not wish to place the Council in a predicament. Several councillors expressed approval of the young man’s action and the engineer asked how the Council intended to replace him. Cr. Stanley said he was against employing an experienced hand as the salaries already being paid amounted to about £BOO per annum. The engineer took'exception to this stating that only about £650 was being paid out in salaries,' He also informed the Council that unless a man with some experience was employed the staff would be unfairly treated. . . ,

Crs. Mackie, Brown and Bell were of the opinion that a good nun should be advertised for and that Wood’s position be kept open for his return, After discussion it was proposed by Cr. Stanley that applications be called for a junior assistant electrician at a salary of £lO4 per annum. Seconded by Cr. Brown and carried. clerk’s HOLIDAYS The cleric’s application for his annual holiday of a fortnight was granted.
