Gordon

On Friday last a large gathering . of the settlers of Gordon and surrounding districts! met in the school room, the occasion being a compli--1 mentary social, tendered to Mr Tom Maisey, who recently returned from the front. Mr J. Cowan presided. A first-class programme of musical items was rendered during the evening, and was much enjoyed by all present. During the interval the Chairman expressed the pleasure all felt at seeing Mr Maisey, and that he was making such a speedy recovery. Mr J. A. Brookes, in a neat speech, presented the visitor, from his many friends, with a safety razor, wallet and housewife. Speeches were also given by Mrs Brooks, Messrs F. Sheat, Whitworth, Newsome, F. Montague, Wbatford, and Grigg. In responding Mr Maisey thanked all present for their kindly welcome and he felt that he had only done his duty to his country, and was looking forward to again taking his stand beside his brave comrades at Gallipoli. Kind assistance was rendered to the programme by Mr an 1 Miss Scott (Waharoa), Miss Arnold, and Misses C. and A. Maisey, Turanga-o-moana, and Miss Van Veen, Auckland. Trout fishing is now in full swing,

and some goad catcher have been made, fish from two to four pounds weight being common. The usual fartnightly meeting of the Gordon Ladies Red Cross Guild was held at Mrs Newsome’s on Wednesday. There was a fair attendance, Mrs Brooks (President) presided. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs Grigg (Secretary) and duly confirmed. After discussion re business to be done in the ensuing fortnight, it was unanimously decided that the Guild go into recess for a month from December 15. The ladies contributed a large bundle of garments to be sent to destitute Belgians. Mrs Brady (hostess for the afternoon) dispensed afternoon tea, after which, by special request, a letter from the front was read by Mrs Grigg, and \yas listened to with intense interest. With thanks to Mrs Newsome (treasurer), for the use of her house, the meeting 'then djs T persed.
