Comic Opera for Te Aroha
“THE GIRL IN THE TAXI.’’ At the Theatre Royal on next Monda.y night, the 15th instant, there will be introduced what is claimed to be the very latest success in musical comedy, ‘‘ The Girl in the Taxi,” which had such a phenomenal run in Sydney and Melbourne. It has proved a veritable gold mine to J. C. Williamson (Ltd.), even outrivalling “ The Merry Widow,” in box office receipts. To the general brightness of the whole performance may be ascribed the success of “ The Girl in the Taxi,” and the production will probably prove as popular here as it did elsewhere. It will be presented on an elaborate scale, and interpreted by a clever company of English and Australian artists. Miss Violet Collinson is in the leading soubrette role of Suzanne,. She is said to possess a good voice and a most fascinating stage presence, besides being a clever dancer. Miss Ida Legatt is the leading soprano. Apart from her
clever operatic performances, she has much fine concert work to her credit, having been selected by the Sydney Philharmonic Society as leading soprano for their Christmas concerts. Mr D. B. O’Connor, another member, will be remembered best in New Zealand as one of the Pollards, when he made such a success as Frank Abercod in “ Florodora.” Since then'has untfertaken Danilo in “The Merry Widow,” and the leading roles with J. C. Williamson’s organisations. Mr “Berty Nicholson also figured with the Pollard Company in “ Bluebell in Fairyland ” and “Hook of Holland.” Messrs Geo. Franklyn, F. Haining, Maurice Rosenthal (comedian), and Will Everard (tenor), are all English performers of note, the two last-named being in the original production of “ The Taxi ” in England, with the late George Edwards’ organisation. The box plan is now open at H. Jackson’s stationer
