ROUND-THE-WORLD TELEPHONE
A distinguished French engineer, says the “Temps,” has invented a system of telephone relays which will enable the liupian voice to be carried from one end of the worid to the other. Tlie inventor, who has already to liis credit eome of the finest discoveries in the domain of electricity, hopes that by extending the use of reinforcing currents it will be possible not only to beat all records, as the Americans promise to do at the opening of t/ie Panama Pacific Exhibition by speaking from New York to San Franecisco, more than 250u0 miles apart, but to converse between Paris and Capetown. x The present record in lopg-distanoe telephoning in Europe by overhead wires ts between 1000 and 1100 miles. In America, by employing underground cables, it is possible to telephone from New York to Denver, a distance of 1650 miles. lOBACCONALS There is cause for thought to the smoking community in the opinion of Dr. S’. Davies, medical officer of health for Woolwich, who, according to “The Times” classes those who consume more than 2oz. ol tobacco a week as excessive smokers. Ho gives the amount of tobacco smoked per adult male as 2.40 z. a week as against.l.voz. ton years ago. A tobacconist who supulies tobacco in excess to the greatest of the land declared on Saturday that 2oz. per week would not satisfy more than 10 per oent. of his clients. Ho declared that literary men are most deserving of Dr. Davies’ censure. Sir J. M. Barrie, for instance. probably heads the list. A thoughtful and meditative smoker, he is known to exceed Dr. Davies’ limit by more than double. Mr. George R. Sims is said to smoke from dawn to bed-time. While literary meu mostly smoke pipes, artists smoke cigarettes, some as many as forty, or 2oz. of tobacco per day.
