CONSTRUCTION OF A CANAL.

London, March 18. The Duke of Sutherland, presided at a meeting called for the purpose of inaugurating a scheme for constructing the Forth and Clyde canal. It is estimated the canal will coat seventeen million when constructed to sufficient depth to admit of the passage of warships. The completion of the canal will permit of constructing shipbuilding and repairing yards on the edge of Loch Lomond, twelve miles outside of the possible range of gun fire. The work will employ 30,000 workmen for a period of nine years. The Duke of Argyle aud Lord Brassey have supported the scheme.
