Household Hints.
We beg to acknowledge receipt of the undersigned from a lady of this district, and one whom, we might mention, has taken many prizes at Te A roha aud outside shows for cookery, preserves, etc. We will be pleased to uublish suitable recepies forwarded to this office by the ladies of Te Aroha and surrounding districts.
—Preserving Fruit— Fill the jars with carefully chosen fruit - using only that which is free from spot or bruise. Cover with syrup—cold —put lids on jars loosely ;do not screw the lids on, aud stand in a moderately cool oven, using a sheet of cardboard on the bottom of the oven or your jars may crack. The lid of au old bandbox answers the purpose nicely. Gradually increase the heat, but do not at any time let the oven get fiercely hot, or the fruit will be unevenly cooked. When the syrup boils the fruit will be d< ne, except quinces which take longer slower cooking to make them pink The rubbers should bo on the jars before putting in the oven, and when the fruit is done screw the lids on tightly and stand the jars on a cloth till cool. Fruit done this way will keep for years, aud much trouble is saved, as it is so much cooler than the old method.
