Borough Council.

The monthly meeting of the above was J«id last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, (Mr R. L. Somera), and Crs Hubbard, Spence, Jackson, Annan, Devey and Rowe. The Auckland Gas Company wrote enquiring as to the Council’s tar requirements for season 1907-8. The County Clerk notified that Cr Donaldhad been appointed a member of the -Image Committee, in place of Cr Lamey, who has left the district. ,“• Toland, M.H.R., wired enquiring for a . nam . ea of the Ministers who saw Te •Arona railway station and agreed that improvements were necessary. W. J. Ellis and Company wrote asking for a share of the Counoil’s work. Foreman to be instructed to share the work.

Seager Bros., Auckland, stated that they are getting along with the pipes and would forward them shortly. Stewart and Fenn, Ltd., notified the increase of duty on electrical appliances from 10 to 20 per cent. In regard to the increase in duty on electrical machinery, Cr Hubbard proposed that they should ask their member to oppose the extra 10 per cent duty imposed.—Agreed to*

The Cambridge Borough Council wrote enquiring the Council’s method of computing water rates. The Tourist Department asked permission for the head gardener at the Domain, to remove stones from the creek in Boundarystreet, the material being required for improvements being effected at the Domain. The Mayor moved that the request be granted, subject to the approval of the Works Committee. The President of the Invercargill Wednesday Half-holiday Association, solicited the Council’s co-operation in having the law altered so that all factories and shopkeepers shall observe the same day. On Cr Rowe’s proposition it was decided to support the resolution. W. S. Evans asked the Council to send a few loads of sand for pathway leading to his cottage in Rata-street. He had formed the path and dug a drain at his own expense.

Cr Hubbard - said people were riding on this, footpath, and he inoved that the Works Committee allow him a few loads.—Carried. The Works Commitee were instructed to get the Pound board fixed up, and also repair the fences. ,

A good deal of correspondence was received in regard to electrical appliances and telephones. The Treasury requested the payment into the Public Account of £73 Is 2d, half-year’s interest on £4,174125. The Town Clerk reported that he had written to the blacksmiths and livery stable keepers about leaving traps and machinery on the road at night, and as it was a breach of the by-law, the Clerk was instructed to lay information for any violation of the law. The foreman of works reported on a number of works carried out during the last fortnight. An amusing discussion took place in regard to the footpath past Cr Annan’s house, the Works Committee jnstifyiDg their action. Air A. Higgins offered to supply broken metal at 5s per yard.—Received. The Mayor moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Cr Rowe, and carried

“ Notice to construct a bridge over the Waihou river at Te Aroha with approaches hereto, under the powers conferred by Section 219 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1900. To the honourable the Minister for Public Works, and to the chairman and members of the Piako County Council.— Notice iB hereby given that the-Te Aroha Borough Council acting under and by virtue of the powers conferred by section 219 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1900, desires to construct over the Waihou River at Te Aroha a wooden truss bridge (piers of totara, trusses and stringers jarrah, decking rimu) to be in the position known as the foot of Ken-rick-street, Te Aroha, and whereas it is the opinion of the Te Arohff Borough Council that the erection of the said bridge with approaches thereto in the position aforesaid will be of advantage and benefit to a considerable portion of the inhabitants of the adjacent County of Piako, as well as to the inhabitants of the Te Aroha Borough, and whereas it is in the opinion of the Te Aroha Borough Council reasonable that the Piako County Council should contribute to the cost of constructing such work.' Therefore in accordance with the regulations gazetted in that behalf, there are herewith sent plans, specifications and estimates of the work referred to, such estimates being in amount £7,336, but out of which credit will he given for any sum. the Government may give by way of grant in aid. “ And notice is further given that the proportion of the cost which it iB proposed each local authority should bear shall be as follows :—(1) Te Aroha Borough Council, one half;,(2) Piako Connty Coudcil, one half; and that it is the intention of the Te Aroha Borough Council on the expiration of two months from the date of this notice to apply to the Governor for power to construct the work, and to recover one half of the cost from the Piako County Cpuncil; and that any objection to this proposal must be sent to the Governor within such period of two months.” The Electrician reported that the connections of Messrs Beswick, Green and RobinBon were broken by the recent gale ; the poles froin which Mr Baskett’s and Roman Cathulic Church connections run, partly gave way, and two or three other poles require attention, Mr Robinson’s connection was broken alertly after starting running on Sunday, and caused interruption to the light until 5.30 p.m. The machinery and valves have been overhauled at the powerhouse. The following are the new connections : Mr lights, Mr Frith four lights. Accounts? amountiug to £212 13s 8d were passed for payment. The present overdraft stood at £953 18e, and with the accounts passed that night, would be £1,166 11s Bd.
