NEW ZEALAND CONGRATULATED.
Sydney, Oct. 28. The " Sydney Morning Herald," in a leading article today, congratulates New Zealand upon the result of the recent loan for conversion purposes. It hopes that the indications of returning prosperity on which the operation was based will bo thoroughly realised, and a more prosperous era establisked. The " Sydney Tolegraph " also publishes a leading article on the same subject to-dny. It snys New Zealand must be regarded as having done remarkably well. Tnis is the first three and a half per cent, venture, and as euch <marks^a distinct advance in the credit of the colony.

SURVIVORS ARRIVE AT BALTIMORE.
New York, October 27. Two shipwrecked seamen belonging to the ship Earnmoor have returned to Baltimore. They relate a terrible tale of hardship and suffering. They left the wreck with two others in an open boat, and owing to a want of provisions became famished with hunger. Two of the unfortunate quartette succumbed to their privations, and the survivors were compelled to eat their dead bodies to sustain their own lives.

Zanzibar, October 27. Captain and party had an encounter with a party of 5,000 of Bushire's followers, and defeated the enemy, with a loss to the latter of 300 killed.

UNITED KINGDOM REQUIREMENTS.
London, October 27. MeLuvks estimates the wheat crop of the United Kingdom at 8,750,000 quarters, and says that for import nearly 19,000,000 will be required.
BRISTOL LABOURERS.
GREAT MASS MEETING-

London, October 27. A ivuss meeting of sixty thousand labourers was held at Bristol yesterday, at which resolutions were passed urging the desirability of a material improvement in the condition of labour. It was resohed to organise a combination of workmen for the purpose of carrying this resolution into effect.

London, October 27. The Albert dockmen have not yet agreed, to the terms of compact proposed by the employers, but are getting higher pay than formerly, and ellbrts will be made to effect an agreement before the 4th proximo.

London, October 27. The Zarewitch is to marry the Princess Marie Giacie, and after the wedding ceremony they will proceed to Stamboul.

WORKMEN'S INSTITUTE.
OPENED BY MR GLADSTONE.
London, October 27. The Right. Hon. W. E. Gladstone formally opened the Workmen's Institute at Saltney yesterday. Mr Gladstone, in the course of hie remarks, reviewed the progress of workers for the past half century. He praised the colonial Rystem of local government, instancing the American's love of freedom as a proof of its immense advantage.

New York, October 27. The " Now York Herald " states that Great Britain and America have agreed to a new extradition treaty.

London, October 27. Lord Salisbury, replying to a deputation fcotn the Baptist Union in reference to atrocities reported in Crete, stated that the English Consul there had reported that the injury sustained by, Christians had been overstated. , , , 3 ■. •
