AID TO UNEMPLOYED. AN ASTONISHING RETURN. Wellington, September 12.
Mr Goldik intends asking the Government whether 132 men employed upon Otago Central for the last fourteen months have been paid from the railway loan or consolidated revenue. If the latter he wants a similar thing done in the other districts, and a fair distribution made in each provincial district of assistance to the unemployed. He has been moved to this by a return which shows that the following amounts have been expended on relief works in the colony from May, 18S8, to March, 1889 :— Auckland, £3,800; Hawkes Bay, £4,361; Nelson, £1,009; Canterbury, £13,537: Obago, £13,972.
