Dkath of Wm. BbSBY. — By cablegram, we learn of the death at Boston, Mase. , on Tuesday, March 16th, at the age of sixty, of William Busby, well known as a skilful player at draughts, and who acted as a coach to Martins when the latter played his last match with Wyllie. In 1876, he accompanied Martins to America, and settled in Boston as a manufacturer of boxinggloves, when the latter returned to this country. Prior to leaving for the United States, Busby was for some years resident in Glasgow, where he occupied a prominent position among the followers of the " silent game $" indeed, a challengeof hislayopenfor many a day to play anyone in Great Britain, bar Wyllie and Martins. Busby, ib may be remembered, visited Glasgow fully a year ago, and looked after the interests of Barker when he defeated Martins, the exchampion, in a match for £200. Bill Busby was also "an old-time pugilist." He trained Joe Goss, the Englishman, for his fight with Paddy Ryan, Sullivan's old opponent, for the championship of America. Busby was an old Birmingham man, and fought 17 battles in England. — "Glasgow Weekly Herald." Mr J. P. Reed recently played eight games blindfolded with eight of Chicago's strongest players. He took the white side of the Bristol, Cross, Doctor, Dundee, Kelso, Old Fourteenth (2) and Paisley. He won four and drew four. John McCallan (Cowpen) and Thos. Reod (Hetton) are matched for a £10 stake. Play will start on Saturday, May 18th, al the Queen's Head, 1 Gateshead. Mr John L. Richmond is stakeholder and referee. A match of eight games, wins and draws to count, for a stake of £10, took place on the 16th of March between R. Dover and M. Lumsley, with the following result : — Dover, 2 ; Lumsley, 0; drawn, 5. Mr John L. Richmond was stakeholder and referee.
Mr J. J. Miller's trotting horses and brood mares were offered for unreserved sale in Melbourne a few days back. Estimate realised 57& guineas, the purchaser being Mr Armitage, and White Rose realised 32& guineas. TTeight, 32 guineas, Mr Armstrong ; Neil Guillam, 33 guinoas, Mr Donbleday; Clara M., 33 guineas, W. Bennett; Red Rose, 450 guineas, Mr Alcoek. Horses in training : Architect, 170 guineas, W. J. Austin ; Ronestae, 200 guineas, T. K. Bennett ; Probitus, 250 guineas, H. Mawbey ; Lucretia, 600 guineas, Mr* Alcoek. The imported stallion Redwind was passed in at 800 guineas.
A storm moves thirty-six miles per hour. Watches were first constructed in fourteen hundred and sov&nty-six.
