LAND TENURE, TE AROHA.

In our issue of Saturday last we referred to the recent interview between Messrs Dobson, Ilotfc, and Gavin ( the committee representing Te Aroha Town Board) and Mr Lipsey with respect to the important matter of secnriug a more satisfactory tenure for Te Aroha township allotments. We now publish the correspondence which has since passed, between the Board, and Mr Lipsey on the subject-, nnd by reference to our advertising columns it will be seen the chnirn»nn of the Town Board has convened a public meeting of those interested for next Monday evening. We purpose referring to thh important question afe length in a future issue.

Town Board Office, To Aroha, 20th August, 1888. Geo, Lipsey, Esq., Te A roll a. Siu, — The Te Aroha Town Board have instructed me to wiite and ask yon to be good enough to stnte wh^t measures you would consent to being taken with a view to a better tenure being obtained for the To Aroha township allotments. Yon nro aware the present tenure is considers 1 by many as unsatisfactory, and there can be little doubt that were a more satisfactory form of title given, it would lead to a larger investment of capital and a better clasg of buildings being erected. A freehold is of course what would be most valued, but failing that, a lease iv perpetuity at the present rental would be perhaps the next best title. The Board are confident you will fully recognise the importance to the owners of the land of giving every possible encouragement to permanent settlement, improvements, and the investment of capital, and will thanlc yon to reply at yonr earliest convenience, stating what yonr wishes are in the matter, and what assistance jou are | prerared to render in order that the desired end may bo obtained. — I have the honour to be, etc. J. McL. Murray, Clerk To Aroha Town Board.

(Copy.) Te Aroha, August 25th 1888. J. McL. Murray Esq., Clerk To Aroha Town Board. Sir, — In reply to yours of 20th insfc. I beg to state :—l.: — 1. That I am willincr for leases to be, granted in perpetuity with respect to any allotments in the Te Aroba township at the present, rental to any persons who desire to obtain- snch, and will do all in my power to meet the wishes of local i residents in this matter. The rent to be paid yearly in advance ; also, any improvements or buildings made or erected thereon not to be removed from the ground so leased, but remain, unless the permission of Ihe lessors to remove same has been previously obtained in writing, 2. With regard to a freehold, I cannot at present hold out any hope. I fully recognise the importance to the owners of the land of giving every possible encouragement, to permanent settlement, and improvement and will do all in my power to pnt Morgan Town on the same footing, and may state I havo already had a conversation with some ot the owners, who are most willing to do anyth'vg to encourage a movement in the direction indicated. — Trusting that this may meet your views, I have the honor to be, etc., e'c.,' C4eo, LirsEy*
