MINING NEWS The Safety of Miners.

TiiK general instructions issued to the various mine manngcis by Mr Jas. M. McLaren, Mining Inspector, ye providing hoods for the cages, and otherwise takingpi crauiions for the safety of miners, are being complied v>ich by the scveial companies. At the New Prince Imperial, Waiotahi, Cambiia, and Caledonian, the requisite alteiation have been made, and in the case of the other mines, the works aie now in course of completion. At the Prince Imperial and Waiotahi mines, hoods have been piovided for the rages, while in addition to this a self-acting irame consisting of four iron bars has also been pi o- \ ided, which co\ evs the shaft while the cage is below, and thus it is impossible for an employe or truck to iall down the shaft. It might be explained that the iron frame is in tho form ot a squaie, with small holes pierced through the flat iron in each comer, and when the cage reaches it in its ascent from the .shaft, this frame rises on top of it. being guided by four perpendicular stauncli iron >yhes. When tho cage descends, the frame is left across the shaft, so that such accidents as that which recently occured at Coromandel aie thus prevented. At the Caledonian mine hoods have been provided for the cages, and a self-acting iron fence about fivo feet high covers each of the open sides of the shaft while the cage is below, rendering accidents almost im|jossiblc. Afc tho Kapanga Co. 's mine, Coromande), this matter has also been attended to, while it might be mentioned that the necessary iron- work was in course of preparation, and the alterations were being made to the cages, at the time the recent fatal accident occurred. Licensed Holdings for Maritoto. Latest reports from the prospector's (Mcßrinn's) claim at Maritoto are unsatisfactory, while nothing of importance has been discovered in any of the neighbouring mines. I have excellent, authority for stating that in consequence of this state of things the Warden has now under consideration the desirability of granting licensed holdings, and will announce his decision re the matter at the sitting of the Warden's Court to be held on the 22nd inst. It is almost certain that unless the Act is amended in the meantime so that the Warden may have power to order the employment of one man to every acre, no licensed holding of a greater extenu *han five acres will bo granted, though St is just possible the area, may be increased to ten acres at Te Mata, and similar localities where the ground has been prcx iously worked and abandoned. Tbo Fatal Accident at Coromandel. 5" understand that a claim for damages lias been made againet the Kapanga CJ.M. Co., Coromandel, in connection with tho recent accident, by which Mr Frank TCneeibone lost his life through a truck falling down the shaft. The damages are said liO be set down .at £1.000.
