THE LITTLE HOUSEKEEPER
She wearf- a spotted h n (kerchief Around her sunny hair; Her skirts are kilted tiiily, Her little hands a>e bare, S!\e doe« not do her work in gloves, This wise and bu-y maid ; To bake, or wash, or sweep, or sew, She's not a bit afraid. An 1 while she's busy through the house, So gracefully she poes, The fairesi bslles might iinitato The maiden's very pose. A score of preitv attitudes Unconsciously she'll take ; It were lucky for the p sinler that Could such a picture make. 'Mong the china and the pretty thing*, The pictures on the wall. The little homewife moves abouf, The prettiest thing of all. She eenfly waves the feathery brush, Her hands above her head, And everything grows beautiful Where'er her light feet tread. It's up and down, and here and there, The little las<* you pass ; One hour the silver haB her care, Another hour the glas9 ; But she's prettiest on the washing-day, Among the blowing clothes, As bending o'er the snowy pile, Her face like any rose. O, many a lovely girl I know Can dress and dance and play ; And gay companions are they Just for a summer day ; But then the Little Housekeeper Will brighten any life ; And he will be a happy man That wins her for a wife.
