FA RMING EXTRA CTS. (From N.Z. Farmer, for December.) Business Methods in Farming.
It is not possible for any one, writes W. J. Barton, to the Nashville|/im6T/crt>J, to handle money successfully in any business who is lacking in the art of creating capital. Nine tean-twontieths of the young men, in our knowledge, who first rentured into business on borrowed capital came to grief. They lacked knowledge of the princijiles of their buiineas which comes of experience and close, hard thinking. Win 11. Vandorbilt mortgaged his little island farm for §3,000 and spent the greater part of the money on it, and came out sueee^nd Me was trained in the house- of his lather, and kne^ ItiC art of turning the penny YVhoie we ■" xl one come out so successful as he did, fity others will go to the >\ all umler a morrgtwge. In our opinion nothing would result so disastrously to our ngueultuial interests as that of allowing fai mci a a f ree run on the banks under the moi tgage system A temporary show of pLo^ieiity might be made in erecting new buildings cttiddiessdng up the larms ; but the ine\u iblo le^ult in the ma]ority of the cases w ould be tore closuxes and a transfer of property to the banks. The money-lender, whether he be fanner or other business man, is. usually a a financial success, while a constant boi row er is a? certainly a financial failure. So we would say to ac farmer, look to your business tor n- ney to run it Cieate }our own capital oue of your surplus products. Keep what is not actually needed to lun you invested, loaned or in bank. Spend sparingly and judiciously. Economize closely in everj thing. Keep alive to your business, and keep your business alive. Shun debt as you would a viper Compare your own methods of business with that of your successful neighbour. Keep your etforts -w ithin the bounds of your mental grasp for to overreach it, is simply to commit financial suicide. Save your lands by careful tillage, and improve them by reat and fertilising.
