Village Settlements.
The number of applications for sections under the Village Settlement Scheme will be very encoui aging to Mr Ballance, and promises a success that must be of the greatest service to the province. Our resources will be increased, and the men who so settle will be taken out of competition in tbe labour maiket— no small consideration in these clays. Near some of these settlements, gum-digging will be available to assist the settleis. We hope that in others,, less favouiably placed, forest planting will be canied on simultaneously. Theaid.it would give is appaient, and it is no small consideration that the aid would ultimately cost the countiy nothing— pei haps even be attended with a "profit. In connection with these settlements we are glad to leain that the Parnell Borough Council has decided to let the Government have the thousand acres of its Taheke endowment at such price, between <£i and £2 per acre, as Government may think it fair to charge to the settleis. t The Parnell Council deserve ' credit for' this resolution. They cannot use the> land," and are not in a position to, settle it themselves. It is said to be of 'excellent quality but too isolated to be taken ' up "by individual ' settlers. The only block' now in the way at ' Taheke is the 'endowment giveri to Auckland. The 1 City CoUncil'have 1,500 acres, and have not yet, tome to teims with the Government. They will, we' Jiop'e, - follow the t » example of the Parnell ] Council^ and do. what» they can to /.assist , the Government an, , carrying' out < a, scheme so promising for the welfare of the country.
