Wellington, August 31. The amount' of the Gorge contract first named was wrong. ,It is really considerably below £79,000, but the Public Works De pat tment will no£ allow the exact : sura to be known at. present, as the contract will probably ,be,:modifiod in essential particulars. There were 14 tenderers, The contract includes four miles through the gorge, but not all the bridges, as expected. The line will : be opened from Napier to Woodville in February. The contract just let on the. Wellington* W.oodvillejine of six miles embraces some of the roughest work on tho whole line. - -
