The result of the bank assay of 1490zs of bullion fioin 8 tons of Waiorongoniai quartz tieated at tlic Kew Era Quartz reilnction works, find sent down to Thames on Wednesday last, was not known up to the hour of going to press. In out today's supplement we leprint the report which appealed in some of the Auckland papers respecting the above, but there is no ground whatever for anticipating any grand return, the bullion was lead lullion containing some traces of gold ; and is ttot expected by those in chaige of the New Era battery to prove veiy valuable. Mr Wick who is in ehaigo of this plant is earning out several important alterations in connection therewith, aiid no expense is being spared to "faake it complete in evjry particular. AYe trust Ohinemuri County Council will at their meeting to-day pass a us<lution urging Government to at once let further sections of the Wa'kato-Thames railway ; many men are idle in the distiiet just now who might bo usefully employed on this woik. It might be well for Te Aioha residents to forwaid a petition to Government with the same object in view. The woik should be pioceeded wich fiom loth ends simultaneously. 'Iherj i-, < t la-t a leasonable prohpect of) the furiuce at K.nangahnke being started in the course of a few days. The Minister of Mines statement will , be found in our to-da;y's supplement. The usual monthly meeting of the To Aroha Public Libiary Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present: Messrs R. Uarris (chairman), A. Menzies (sec.), J. Ilott, and J.i 5 !. MilN. Minutes of the previous meeting were re.id and confirmed and several accounts passed for payment. The business was entirely of a routine ! character. M the Thames County Council meeting ' on Wednesday last, it was resolved to cooper ite with the Ohinemuri County Conn- ■ cii r3 tho extermination of the Cod! in Moth. • A sad accident occurred on this day ' week whereby a boy in tho employ of Mi Turnbull at Maungakaxva, met with almost instantaneous death, through the overturning 1 of a cart load of firewood which lie was bringing to the homestead] The turned cait almost completely covered the boy, who was when found i quite dead ; the horse was also killed by the accident. The poor lad had acted contrary to instructions in going by himself to the bush. We would remind our readers of the concert on next Fiiday evening, at W?iio-> rongomai, in aid of the school funds. The programme will be a varied one, including vocal and instrumental pieces, choruses, quartettes, etc. ; local talent, both from Te Aroha and Waiorongomai will be well represented. Mr A. \Y. Edwards announces by advertisement the arrival of lirst consignment of new stock, \\liioh is now opened up. The frost on several nights lately has been the most severe experienced in this part of New Zealand for years. Mr Isaac Bates announces in this issue that the cheap cash sale of saddlery, harness, etc., will be continued "one week longer, positively closing next Saturday night. On Wednesday next Mr J. S. Buckland will sell by public auction at Te Aroha the horses and plant of Messrs Ilethrington and McKnight, carters and contrac tors, in consequence of Mr McKnight having decided on going to Kimberley. The horses comprise beveral exceptionally staunch and handporne teams, and are well worthy of attention. For particulars, see •advfcittserneiit.
As will be seen by reference to our advertising columns Dr 11. J. Rpeer, lale oj Palmerston Buildings, Auckland, has recently removed to Wellington. On Thursday morning there whs another blow up from Tarawem volcano, a great coin inn o£ steam, stones, mud, etc., being thrown up to a groat height. The steam was distinctly visible from Te Avoha for about hall! r.n hour. As will be seen by reference to our advertising 1 columns the s.s. Tamsni sails from Auckland for Kimberley on ov about the 22nd. Passengers arc now being booked, and we aie requested to state that those purposing to avail of this oppor. tunity for conveyance to the new goldrield, should make application before Tuesday next, 13th inst. We (Auckland Tlemld) understand that Messrs Hunt and Carson, the proprietors of the new smelting furnace, having secured all their r'ghts, &c, in the invention, have now avnnged to erect a small trial smoltor at the works of Mr Kelly, ironfounder, Custom street West. The woik of ci'oction will bo prosecuted vigorously, and us a great deal of the necessary power is available, a few weeks should see the preliminary trial. A great deal of interest is at the prescat moment attached to anything that has for its object the reduction of quartz upon an improved piinciple. The amendments hVide by the Legislature Council in the Mines Bill have been agreed to by thellouse of Repiosentativeg. The following amongst other blocks of native lands situated in the Auckland provincial district are gazetted Crown Lands, having been acquired by the Government:—Block Jvungiloto, Thames district, containing 3 roods 37 pot dies ; Ohinomuii Ko 3a, containing 278 acre?; Ohinemuri, No Ba, containing 544 acres; Ohinemuri, No 11a, containing 27 ocros ; Owharoa, No 3\, Ohinemuri district, containing 78 acres, 2 roods. On next Thursday evening a vocil and nstrumeatal concert will bo held at fcjhaftesbury, in aid of the Anglican church now in course of erection at Te Aroha. A carefully prepared and attractive programme, lias been airanged, the object to which the pjoceeds will bo devoted is woithy of hearty support, and as the nights aio now moonlight, the assemblage on the occasion should be a large ohp, including lepwentalives from all the sunounding distiicts. Seveial new clauses have been introduced into the Municipal Coiporations Bill which is now in progress thiough Committee of Legislative Council. The usual monthly meeting of Ohincinmi County Council w.ll be held at Paeroa to-day. Councillors from the various ridings who attend will have an opportunity of judging in what manner the contracts for load maintenance are being carried out. TJio condition of the County loads in many places is simply disgraceful, and it is high time some steps were taken toenCoico the fulfilment out of! contracts according to specifications, or elbO terminate the contracts forthwith. To draw up specific itions for the guidance of intending contractor, and never enforce their being carried out, is surely an injustice to both the ratepayers and als-> to those tenderers who put in a pi ice in the belief that the specifications meant something more than waste paper, and wouid he enforced. On which of the several loads icecntly let for maintenance aie the specifications being cairicd out? Wo puipose saying bomething futther on this matter by-and-bye. The adjourned public meeting from Ist inst., le the adoption of some form of local self-government, was held in the Public Hall, Waiorongomai, on lastThnisday evening, Mr Jas. Mur.ro in tho chair. There was a moderate attendance on the occasion. The Clerk of Piako County Council supplied tho following information (at the request of Cr Murphy) respecting goldfield receipts : Gold revenue (which included all revenue derived from the field excepting gold duty), for the year ending March 31st, 1886, L 572 8s 6d. Gold duty for same peiiod, L3lB 13s Bd. Total, LB9l 2s 2d. An impression appeared to exist amongst those present that the expense of. running a Borough would be very great. The Chairman said the cost of working would depend on tho councillors themselves, who could either \ vote their Mayor a salary, or the position might be simnjy an honorary one; and that apart from this the expenses would, be about tho same for either form oE [government. Muss> s Montague and O'KeeiL'o &poke in favour of both townships and Quartzville being formed into a Borongh Messrs Jamieson and Sampson advocated Waiorongomai being constituted a Town District; others also addrsssed the meeting, and Several resolutions Were proposed and seconded, but were not put to the meeting, it being finally decided, after considerable discusion, to fuither adjourn the meeting ponding tho passing of the Municipal Corporations Billj now before the House.
