THE KIMBERLEY GOLDFIELD. RAPID PASSAGE OF THE ORPHEUS.
Telegram from the Colonial' Secretary. Mr T. J. Allen, shipping agent, who despatched the firvt vessel from Auckland to Kiniberley <? old fields direct, received the following cablegram to-day, from one of the owners of the ve-sel : -" Wakapuaka. ! July 8. — The echoouer Orpheus arrived I from Auckland. All well. Twenty day* " As the distance from this port to Cambridge Gulf is some 3,6*00 miles, this may be con sidered a remaikably faat passage. The Orpheus left Auckland on Sunday, 1 June 6th, with a fine southerly wind, which no doubt carried her into the S. ID. trades. The Orpheus look a full assorted cargo shippad by Mr Heather and others, and had several Aucklanders on board for Hie new diggings. Mr Allen has since despatched the barque Notero for tho same destination, and she is to be followed by the scboonei Carnlie. Message From Western Australia. In order to satisfy himself and intending passengeis to Kimberley that the proopecte were not exaggerated, and that there \\ ere no obstacles to minei> going to the diggings, Mr Allen sent an inquiry by cable to the Acting Colonial Secretary of Western Australia, aim has in reply received the following message : " Pbrth, 29th June.— lt is said that sufficient water for gold washing is not available on the Kimberley diggings until about October, or even later. There seems no other consideration which need delay miners with means who bring their stores and equipments, including horses. — Actino Colonial Secretary." Contradictory Reports from tbe Field Melbourne, July 2. — The latest accounts to hand regarding Kimberley Goldfield are of a contradictory na'ure.
