TELEGRAPHIC REPORTS.
The following telegraphic despatches, given in the order in which they were received from our correspondents and special reporters, will provide a more vivid and faithful picture of the fearful occurrence than could be given by any consecutive narrative written after the events narrated had taken place :—: —
The First Tidings. Rotorua, June 10, 8 a.m. There has been a fearful eruption of Mount Tarawera, an extinct volcano. The township of Rotorua and the surrounding country are enveloped in dense smoke. Maoris and Europeans are rushing about in a state of great excitement. Property of all kinds will be completely destroyed. People are fleeing in crowds from the district, but they do not know whither to turn, as the whole country from Lake Taupo to Tauranga h covered with a thick smoke, which makes it as dark as midnight.
